Club History

Updated 16 Sep 2021

VK Barnet Volleyball Club was founded in 1980 from a recreational volleyball session that was held at the Queen Elizabeth Sports centre in Barnet.

Building on links with nearby national league club Roundwood, VK grew in size and strength.

As well as always promoting recreational volleyball in the North London area, VK ran 2 Men’s and 1 Women’s teams in the local competitions and played mixed volleyball at tournaments throughout the UK, winning the first Sandwell mixed tournament in 1983. Absolute beginners are frequently seen training with full international or national league standard players. This is something that the club still encourages and is proud of today.

Whilst never wishing to compete at the highest levels, the club proves to be a breeding ground for future stars and a rest home for those who have the best playing days behind them.

Some well known players from VK’s past include, Steve Shittu ( Italian Serie A), Chris Walker, Audrey Cooper (GB Beach Volleyball No.1), Chris Hazel, Dave Kalugerawich, Simon Golding, Donald Deans (England and GB), Danny Ho, and Sean Poole. More recently Juniors have gone on to represent England, Robert Poole, Ryan Poole and Sam Marsh.
